The fifth-seeded University of Redlands women's water polo team captured an exciting 9-8 win in double overtime against No. 4 Cal Lutheran University in Friday's first-round match of the 2013 Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Championship Tournament at Pasadena City College. During a back-and-forth battle that saw neither team gain more than a two-goal advantage, senior driver Jill Stein's (Palm Desert, CA) only netter of the game came at the right time and served as the game-winner to propel the Bulldogs to Saturday's semifinal against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges.
Against the Regals, Redlands nabbed an early 3-1 lead through the first period, as junior center Jaci Cochrane (San Bernardino, CA) and senior driver Stephanie Taylor (Sacramento, CA) combined offensive forces.
After Cal Lutheran evened the count with consecutive scores, the Maroon and Gray answered right back to take a 5-3 lead with three minutes to go in the second stanza. During this spurt, Cochrane stepped up with her third goal of the game, while senior driver Moana Tuipulotu (Lahaina, HI) recorded her first.
The teams traded punches through the 1:57-mark of the third frame, when the Regals fired off their second netter in a row to tie it up at six apiece.
Both defenses buckled down through the end of regulation, with each squad mustering just one goal to send the game into overtime.
The tight contest continued through the first overtime, with Redlands' Tuipulotu putting her team ahead at 8-7 with 1:07 remaining, only to be equalized by another CLU score just 17 seconds later.
Finally, in the second overtime, Stein provided what proved to be the game-winner for the Bulldogs, uncorking her goal with 1:41 left on the clock.
Junior goalkeeper Julie Lupfer (San Diego, CA) provided 14 saves, with four of them coming in the overtime periods.
