Box Score The University of Redlands women's soccer team faced off against the Pomona-Pitzer Colleges Sagehens in a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) match-up on Wednesday night under the lights at Farquhar Field. Despite blasting off 21 shots in a double-overtime nail-biter, the Bulldogs ended in a scoreless tie.
The first half of the contest displayed nothing but a solid defensive game on both ends of the field. The Bulldogs attempted to draw first blood in the contest, as sophomore forward Kate Frame (Fox Island, WA) and senior midfielder Savannah Laursen (Boise, ID) garnered quality looks in the opening 10 minutes. Later in the stanza, sophomore midfielder McKenzie Oliger (Seattle, WA) and senior forward Lihini Weerasinghe (Redlands, CA) also attempted shots for the Maroon and Gray.
The Sagehens made an offensive push late in the first half but were halted by the Bulldog defensive unit of junior Sam Keary (Mission Viejo, CA), sophomore Faith Campbell (Bainbridge Island, WA), and freshman Erin Schlosser (Sammamish, WA).
During the second half, the U of R continued to press offensively by blasting off 15 shots to the Sagehens' two. Redlands excelled in forming numerous openings off break-away plays and second-opportunity chances, as six different Maroon and Gray players posted attempts at the back of the net. Laursen was the Bulldogs' main offensive weapon, racking up six shots due her aggressive style and her willingness to never give up on a play. Junior midfielder Cassie Lively (Redmond, WA), junior forward Jen Franklin (Shoreline, WA), and junior midfielder Summer Norquist (Boise, ID) uncorked two shots to aid in the Maroon and Gray's effort.
After neither team could capitalize in the first extended period, the competitors traded two scoring plays in the final 10 minutes. For Redlands, senior forward Tanya Haggen (Bellingham, WA) threw the first punch but missed wide. The Sagehens answered back with a shot in the 108th minute and then missed high in their final attempt.
With less than 15 seconds left in the game, Haggen corralled a ball that was headed near her towards the goal, presenting a break-away opportunity. As she gathered, reared back, and fired a shot just inside the box, the Sagehen goalkeeper stepped up with a solid save with just seven seconds to go, leaving the final score at 0-0.
For Redlands, freshman goalkeeper Hannah Menk (Pleasanton, CA) earned the start and registered a save, while junior goalkeeper Lexi Felix (Kailua, HI) played the final 65 minutes of the contest.
The Bulldogs registered six corner kicks to Pomona-Pitzer's four.
Redlands (6-4-2, 4-3-2 SCIAC) continues SCIAC play on Saturday, October 18, against the Cal Lutheran University Regals (9-4-2, 6-2-1 SCIAC) at 1 p.m. on Farquhar Field.
