The 13th-ranked University of Redlands women's tennis team battled it out with No. 5 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges on Saturday, succumbing to the Athenas by a score of 0-9. Highlights of the match include three-set efforts at Nos. 3 and 6 singles.
With a three-point deficit after the doubles, the Maroon and Gray faced a difficult, uphill battle against the co-leaders of the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC).
After losing the first set by a score of 6-2, sophomore Natalie Etchegaray (Placentia, CA) fought back to even the count with a 6-3 performance against her No. 3 opponent. However, her foe came back to hand her a difficult three-set defeat.
In just the second match of her young career, freshman Emily Murnin (Salt Lake City, UT) showed great heart at the No. 6 slot. Despite losing the opening set, 6-2, she rallied to win the second by a score of 6-3 and extend the match to a hard-fought third. Although she came up short, she pushed her opponent in a 7-5 decision.
Redlands (7-8, 2-2 SCIAC) continues SCIAC competition on Friday, April 4, when it travels to the University of La Verne for a 2 p.m. match against the 15th-ranked Leopards.
