Pomona-Pitzer Edges Redlands Women's Soccer in SCIAC Postseason Tournament Semifinal

Box Score

The top-seeded University of Redlands women's soccer team competed in the semifinal of the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Postseason Tournament against the fourth-seeded Pomona-Pitzer Colleges Sagehens on Thursday night under the lights on a chilly night at Farquhar Field. Following an hour delay due to a late-arriving official, the teams battled through a hard-fought match on the pitch, with this one ending in favor of the Sagehens by a score of 1-0.

The Bulldogs started the contest off strong by recording the first two shots of the game. Senior midfielder Savannah Laursen (Boise, ID) blasted off the first one, while senior midfielder Summer Norquist (Boise, ID) followed with a shot of her own just moments later.

The Maroon and Gray continued to work towards a score and inched closer by earning two penalty kicks in a one-minute span. However, Sagehen senior goalkeeper Annie Wedel (Trabuco Canyon, CA) denied both chances with impressive saves to keep the game scoreless.

Pomona-Pitzer later capitalized off an opportunity in the 41st minute, when freshman forward Peri Cuppens (Lincoln, NE) scored on an open net after the Bulldog goalkeeper attempted to snag a long cross off the line.

At the start of the second half, Redlands began to slowly find its rhythm by linking on quality passes to better its chances of scoring the equalizer. Nine different Bulldogs fired off a shot in the second half, with senior forward Jen Franklin (Shoreline, WA) and Laursen finding their shots on frame.

After Redlands pushed everyone forward in the final few minutes, the Sagehens held on for the 1-0 upset and a spot in the SCIAC Postseason Tournament final.

Overall, Norquist led the Bulldogs with four shots, while senior midfielder Cassie Lively (Redmond, WA) and Laursen backing her with three each.

Senior goalkeeper Lexi Felix (Kailua-Kona, HI) played the final 45 minutes of action and hauled in two saves.

Pomona-Pitzer tallied only four shots but all four were on frame, with sophomore midfielder Abby Onderwyzer Gold (Oakland, CA) leading the offensive effort with two attempts.

Wedel recorded four saves in a phenomenal first half to earn the win, while junior goalkeeper Corey Goelz (Mercer Island, WA) kept Redlands off the board with two saves in the final 45 minutes.

The Sagehens travel to Thousand Oaks to face off against the third-seeded Cal Lutheran Regals in the SCIAC Postseason Tournament Championship on Saturday, November 7 at 7 p.m. The winner will earn an automatic berth to the NCAA Division III Tournament, while Redlands now hopes for a possible at-large bid.
