The No. 19 University of Redlands women's tennis team opened Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) action on Saturday with an impressive 9-0 sweep of the visiting Caltech Beavers on Verdieck Courts.
In doubles, the top tandem of senior Ceara Sumida (Hilo, HI) and junior Natalie Etchegaray (Placentia, CA) rolled to an 8-2 victory, before junior Gabriela Vasquez (Rancho Santa Margarita, CA) and sophomore Emily Murnin (Salt Lake City, CA) followed suit with a win at No. 3 by the same score. Senior Julia Pollak (Holland, PA) and junior Lauren Villanueva (El Segundo, CA) completed the Bulldog sweep with an 8-3 decision at No. 2.
Etchegaray kept things rolling in singles with her shutout showing at No. 1, which was complemented by Pollak's match-clinching performance at the No. 6 slot, 6-1, 6-1.
All remaining matches went in favor of the Maroon and Gray, as every competitor won by a comfortable margin.
Redlands (3-0, 1-0 SCIAC) returns to action on Tuesday, March 3, when it hosts Christopher Newport University in a non-conference showdown on Verdieck Courts at 3 p.m.
