The No. 22 University of Redlands women's tennis team continued its extended stretch of home matches on Friday with a non-conference showdown against the No. 23 University of Mary Washington (VA). A back-and-forth start to the match finished with the Bulldogs taking two of three doubles matches and then securing four singles wins for a hard-fought 6-3 triumph over the Eagles.
Redlands captured the first point of the match with an impressive 8-1 showing by the No. 2 doubles duo of senior Julia Pollak (Holland, PA) and junior Lauren Villanueva (El Segundo, CA).
Although Mary Washington prevailed at the No. 3 slot, the Bulldogs regained the momentum when senior Ceara Sumida (Hilo, HI) and junior Natalie Etchegaray (Placentia, CA) came away with an 8-6 triumph at the top slot.
In singles, Mary Washington evened the tally with a straight-set performance at No. 3.
With the scored tied at two apiece, the teams traded matches to make it three all, with Etchegaray winning for the Bulldogs, 7-5, 6-2, at No. 1.
From here, the Maroon and Gray took care of business in the remaining matches to nab the 6-3 decision. Sumida defeated her No. 2 opponent, 7-5, 6-2, before Pollak came up with a 6-3, 6-3 victory at the No. 6 slot. Finally, Villanueva rallied from behind to grab a 3-6, 7-6 (5), 10-5 triumph at No. 5.
Redlands (5-0, 1-0 SCIAC) welcomes the No. 8 Sagehens of Pomona-Pitzer Colleges to Verdieck Courts on Saturday, March 7, for a 10 a.m. Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) showdown.
