Redlands' Women's Water Polo Downs Macalester, Falls to VMI

The University of Redlands women's water polo team faced off against Macalester Collge (NY) and VMI in the Thompson Aquatic Center on Friday in non-conference action. Despite losing to VMI, 4-12, the Bulldogs defeated Macalester 11-8 in a contest that found Macalester scoreless through the first half.

In the victory, the Bulldogs held Macalester scoreless through the first half while adding seven unanswered goals. Freshman attack player Breanna O'Dea (Rowland Heights, CA) fired home two scores in the opening period, while freshman attack players Sabrina Scoggin (Ashland, OR) and Sami Walker (Taylorsville, UT) added a goal each to grab a 4-0 advantage.

Redlands continued to roll by firing off three unanswered netters in the second quarter. Senior utility player Taylor Christie (Anaheim, CA) went off for two goals, while freshman utility player Kolby Kahahawai (Kailua, HI) located the back of the net once to give the Bulldogs a commanding 7-0 advantage.

The Bulldogs remained hot at the start of the third quarter by notching four more goals. Senior attack player Annie Kinney (Newport Beach, CA) fired home a score, while sophomore attack player Alea Weber (Haiku, HI) chipped in on the scoring front with a goal. O'Dea and Scoggin remained in the mix by drilling a goal each for the Bulldogs' 11-4 advantage.

Despite not scoring in the fourth quarter, the Bulldogs hung on for an 11-8 victory.  

In game two, the Bulldog scoring came in the second half, starting with a goal off the hand of Taylor on a power play.

The Bulldogs picked up the slack in the fourth quarter by firing home three goals, with Walker starting the trend with a netter on a drawn penalty. Sophomore attacker MaryKate Hunter (Redlands, CA) and junior defender Chum Alvarez-Zackson (Santa Monica, CA) rounded out the scoring for the Bulldogs by recording a goal each en route to the 4-12 defeat.

The Bulldogs (3-15) take on the Chapman University Panthers in Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) action on Wednesday, March 23, at 7 p.m. in the Thompson Aquatic Center.
