Bulldog Baseball Blows by Bowdoin in 17-1 Thrashing

Box Score

For the second game in a row, the University of Redlands baseball team put up 17 runs, with Sunday's 17-1 victory coming over non-conference opponent Bowdoin College (ME). The Bulldogs were dominant at the plate with 16 hits en route to at least one run in all but one inning.

Following his lead-off home run during Friday's win, senior shortstop Aaron Singh (Anaheim, CA) led off Sunday's triumph with a triple to right center.  He crossed home plate for the Maroon and Gray's first run of the game on a sacrifice fly off the bat of junior second baseman Andrew Renteria (Van Nuys, CA).

The Bulldog bats came alive in the bottom of the second with four hits and six runs. With two on and two outs, first-year center fielder Payton Walsh (Santa Ana, CA) uncorked a bases-clearing single up the middle for his team's 3-0 lead. Immediately after a pitching change for the Polar Bears, sophomore right fielder Cal Bridges (Fremont, CA) slammed a double to left field for another two runs en route to the Bulldogs' 5-0 advantage. On the ninth at-bat of the inning, senior first baseman Brendan Moore (Murrieta, CA) knocked an RBI-single to right center before Renteria scrambled home on a wild pitch to net a 7-0 lead for Redlands.

The Maroon and Gray produced five more runs over the next three frames, with Carr knocking a triple to highlight the extra-base hits.

Although the Polar Bears scored in the top of the sixth, the Bulldogs took advantage of the opponents' error in the bottom of the inning to extend their lead to 14-2.

To keep the momentum going, senior third baseman Eduardo Martinez-Razo (Rialto, CA) doubled to left center and Walsh singled through the right side to help supply two more runs in the seventh. First-year pitcher Chris Hardin (San Bernardino, CA) scored the final run of the game on a Bowdoin error to end the contest on a 17-1 victory.

The rookies in Redlands' bullpen came to play, as first-year Andrew Rueter (San Diego, CA) earned the win by matching a career-high six strikeouts in six innings pitched. In addition, first-year Cameron Kundig (Redlands, CA) and Hardin each tallied two strikeouts.

At the plate, Walsh went 3-for-4 and tallied three RBI, while sophomore left fielder Brennan Carr (Chino Hills, CA) hit 2-for-3 with two RBI.

Redlands (9-11-1, 3-3 SCIAC) dives back into its Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) slate with a tough game against No. 10 Chapman University on Friday, March 22, at The Yard. The first pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
