Redlands Baseball Falters at No. 19 Chapman University

Box Score

The University of Redlands baseball team headed to Chapman University for a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) game on Friday afternoon. Unfortunately, the Panthers got hot early, sending the Bulldogs home with a 5-12 loss.

Chapman jumped on the board in the first inning on two hits and two Bulldog miscues. Nonetheless, the Bulldogs surged ahead in the third inning, taking the lead 2-1.

After two walks and a ground ball to move the runners into scoring position, sophomore left fielder Jonah Advincula (Santa Clara, CA) threaded a single through the right side for two RBI.

However, the Panthers found their rhythm, adding eight runs over the next two innings, putting the Maroon and Gray in a 2-9 hole after four.

Fast forward to the top of the seventh, the Bulldogs led off with a walk. After two outs, junior shortstop Max Smyley (Sarasota, FL) stayed patient at the plate and sent one over the fence for a two-run shot to narrow the gap to 4-9.

Unfortunately, the home team tacked on three more in the bottom of that inning for a 4-12 score. And although senior third baseman Anthony Acosta (Simi Valley, CA) drove in a run in the top of the eighth, those were all the runs Redlands could muster, ultimately falling by a final score of 5-12.

Redlands (2-7, 2-5 SCIAC) returns to The Yard on Saturday, May 8, for senior day and a doubleheader against the Chapman Panthers, scheduled for 11 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.
