Errors Prove Costly for Bulldog Baseball in Loss to Stags

Box Score

CLAREMONT, Calif. - The University of Redlands Baseball team struggled on the mound Friday afternoon and committed five costly errors allowing nine runs across the first two innings and despite their comeback attempts late were unable to beat Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on the road falling 13-8.

Redlands drops to 12-10, 3-7 SCIAC and currently sit sixth within the conference standings ahead of the Stags who are now 13-10, 2-5 SCIAC.

The Bulldogs grabbed their first and only lead in their opening at-bats thanks to an RBI groundout from Matthew Brumbaugh (Chula Vista, CA) that brought home Jonah Advincula (Santa Clara, CA) who reached earlier on a single to the shortstop.  He then moved over to third following a double from Mark Kirkland (Redlands, CA) down the left field line.  This lead was short lived though as the Stags would plate four runs in the bottom half of the first, with two of them coming on non-hit plays. It then got worse in the second when CMS would add another five moving the score to 9-1.

Redlands got the bats going with a four-run third coming on five hits.  Luke De Vries (Irvine, CA) and Jared Anderson (Gilbert, AZ) started the inning off with back-to-back singles.  Advincula then drove in the first run with a base knock up the middle and that would then be followed up with a Kirkland double to left field and an Esteban Nakashima (Riverside, CA) single up the middle, which plated the other three runs making the deficit four at 9-5.

The comeback seemed more far-fetched after the fifth and sixth innings when the Stags added three more runs extending their lead to 12-5.  In the eighth UR rallied with another three runs.  Brumbaugh drew a walk, Nakashima got hit by a pitch and Jake Burgess (Riverside, CA) singled on the infield, which loaded the bases.  That's when Payton Walsh (Santa Ana, CA) drew a walk bringing in one, Sebastian Mejorado (Oceanside, CA) would single to second plating another and Anderson would fly out to center making it a four-run game for the second time.  These would be the final runs scored though for Redlands as CMS would tack on insurance in their final at-bats as they would hold on for the win.

Advincula and Kirkland both had three hit days, Nakashima drove home two, and nine different Bulldogs walked or earned a hit. The twelve hits are the second most in a loss (13 vs. La Verne) this season, and it was their 14th game with eight or more runs scored.  Coming into the game they were 12-1 when reaching the eight-run mark in a contest.

The Bulldogs will host the Stags tomorrow, Saturday, April 2 for a doubleheader at The Yard with first pitches set for 11:00am and 2:30pm.
