U of R Women's Lacrosse stays close early against Athenas

Box Score

REDLANDS, Calif. – The University of Redlands Women's Lacrosse team tried to keep the game close Wednesday night against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps inside Farquhar Field, but was unable to pull off the win falling 17-7.

The Maroon and Grey have now dropped three straight moving to 4-9, 3-6 SCIAC and are now forced to win their next three games in order to have a shot to make the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Tournament.

Redlands found themselves in an early hole trailing 6-1 within the first 10:00 minutes with their lone goal coming from Celine Flaig (Redondo Beach, CA) off a feed from Joren Fettig (Bend, OR).  With 2:06 to play in the quarter UR added another this time with Fettig converting off a feed from behind the goal from freshman Erin Steinhour (Poway, CA).  This cut the deficit to four.

It was a defensive battle in the 2nd Quarter with the Bulldogs getting off to a strong start putting up a quick goal from Steinhour to make it a five goal deficit, while at the same time almost pulling off a shutout of the Athenas in the period.  CMS was able to convert off a turnover near midfield scoring to keep it a six-goal game at the half.

A combined eight goals were scored in the 3rd Quarter with CMS holding the 5-3 advantage.  The Athenas added the first three tallies of the period to open the game up to nine until Fettig converted for her second of the game at the 10:20 mark.  After that it was back-and-forth as UR kept it to single digits with Fettig completing the hat trick with 7:28 left followed by Flaig getting fed by Sydney Louie (Lafayette, CA), moving the score to 14-6.

CMS used an early power play to start off the 4th Quarter to make it a double digit deficit and they carried that momentum over the next three minutes to add another two making the score 17-6.  Flaig was able to find the back of the goal with three-minutes left again being fed from Fettig, but it was too late as CMS would come away with the road win.

Redlands finished with 18 shots on the game, six draw controls, 19 groundballs, was 0-for-4 on free-positions, and was 16-for-23 on clear attempts.  Charlie Baum (Hesperia, CA) again played all 60:00 minutes between the posts totaling eight saves facing 25 shots.  She also had two groundballs and a caused turnover.  Fettig led the offense on the evening posting three goals and two assists.  Flaig completed a hat-trick with three goals a groundball, two draw controls, and two caused turnovers and Louie would add a couple of assists with two pick-ups and three caused turnovers.

Redlands remains at home tomorrow, Friday, April 22 a day before commencement when they host Chapman University beginning at 11:00am.
