U of R Women's Lacrosse ends 2022 beating Cal Lutheran 15-4

Box Score

REDLANDS, Calif. – The University of Redlands Women's Lacrosse team closed out their 2022 season with a 15-4 win at Farquhar Field Saturday morning against California Lutheran University.

Redlands ends their season 6-10, 5-7 SCIAC and finish in a tie for fourth within the conference standings.  Despite the tie for the fourth and final spot in the SCIAC Tournament, the Bulldogs do not hold the tiebreaker with Occidental who they beat by one and then lost by two, making them minus one in goal differential.

It was a slow start to the game for the Bulldogs as they allowed the Regals to score first, while taking five minutes to find the back of the goal themselves.   But once they did, the flood gates opened with five in a row coming for the Maroon and Grey to end the first quarter.  During the run, five different players scored, including Maeve Wiencek (Sherwood, OR), Erin Steinhour (Poway, CA), Sydney Louie (Lafayette, CA), Alison Waddles (Long Beach, CA), and Celine Flaig (Redondo Beach, CA).

Redlands carried this momentum into the 2nd Quarter, outscoring the Regals 7-0 to take a 12-1 lead into the break.  Joren Fettig (Bend, OR) got onto the stat sheet with the first tally and was joined by a pair from Maddie Bush (Ladera Ranch, CA).  Louie converted a free-position and Kaitlyn Lesko (Buford, GA) scored her first of the year coming on a man-up situation.  Other scorers from the frame included Wiencek and Steinhour.

The third and fourth quarters were low on offense with a combined six goals being scored between the two teams.  In the third Erika Lopez (Los Angeles, CA) scored her first goal of her senior season at the 12:22 mark and Waddles capitalized on a power play to move the score to 14-2.  Then in the 4th Quarter, Flaig put the game out of reach off a feed from Louie.

Nine different Bulldogs found the back of the net with Steinhour, Waddles, Wiencek, Louie, Bush, and Flaig all recording braces. Bush and Louie had three assists apiece and Flaig added two as well. Charlie Baum (Hesperia, CA) picked up her sixth win on the season with only two goals allowed and one save in 45 minutes as she came in the fourth quarter as a field player swapping with Zoe Charum (Glendale, CA) who played the final 15 minutes in goal.

As a team the Bulldogs held the advantage across the board statistically with a plus eight turnover margin (17-25), 15 more ground balls (30-15), one more clear (9-8), a double digit differential on draw controls (16-6), and 25 more shots (31-6).
