U of R Baseball uses a 14-run second and a shutout from Reiter to beat Whittier 18-0

Box Score

REDLANDS, Calif. – The University of Redlands Baseball team (12-14, 4-8 SCIAC) beat Whittier College 18-0 in a seven-inning run rule at The Yard Friday afternoon. Starter Tyler Reiter (San Diego, CA) threw a complete game shutout while the offense used a 14-run second inning to end their losing streak.

The Bulldogs and Poets were scoreless through an inning and a half before UR scored 14 times and were one batter away from Omar Barraza (San Mateo, CA) getting his third at bat of the inning. The scoring started with a two-run double to right from Jake Burgess (Riverside, CA) plating Will Daniels (Crestline, CA) and Barraza.

The next three Bulldogs, Luke De Vries (Irvine, CA), Max Clark (Fontana, CA), and Cade McClelland (Mission Viejo, CA), each drove in one with RBI-singles as the lead grew to 5-0. Barraza, who led off the inning, came to the plate for a second time and drove in Clark and Jared Anderson (Gilbert, AZ) for a 7-0 lead.

Daniels, who scored to start the inning, then doubled into right center and picked up an RBI. Nathan Buchan (Mercer Island, WA) scored Daniels on a sacrifice fly to center as the inning reached double digits. An Anderson bases loaded walk and a Clark bases clearing double made it 14-0.

In the third Barraza came home for run number 15 as he scored from third on a passed ball. The final three runs of the game came in the fifth as Gabriel Ceja (Long Beach, CA) got a free RBI as he was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. A fielder's choice error at third and another sacrifice fly, this time from defensive replacement Will Cell (Seattle, WA), had the Bulldogs ahead 18-0.

Reiter got out of a jam in the sixth as he stranded the first two batters of the inning that he walked to begin the frame. Then in the seventh he picked up a flyout, strikeout, and a groundout to complete his fourth start with no earned runs allowed.  He improves to 5-1.

Clark continued his hot hitting going 3-for-4 with four RBI's and two runs scored, Barraza scored a career-high four runs while collecting two hits and two RBI's.  Daniels in his first start picked up a 2-for-3 effort adding another three runs scored and an RBI.

The Bulldogs will look for a much-needed series sweep tomorrow, Saturday, April 8 when they travel to Whittier College for a doubleheader with first pitches set for 11:00am and 2:30pm.
