MOORPARK, Calif. – The University of Redlands Men's Golf team shot a first round 295 and sat three strokes out of first place at the California Lutheran University Kingsmen Invitational before ending the invite with a 302 second round that moved them into a second place finish.
Round 1: Fifth Place – 295
The Bulldogs' first round score put them one stroke behind fourth place and No. 11 Trinity University (Texas), two back of second place and the host No. 31 CLU and NCAA Division II Menlo College. The invite leader was No. 29 Whitman College.
Redlands was able to stay attached to the leaders because Jonas DeLeon (Rancho Cucamonga, CA) held the lead after shooting a 67. The score is three off the program record and two off his personal best.
Aaron Buck (Tualatin, OR) was the second highest ranking Bulldog after shooting a 70 and sitting in a tie for sixth. Damon Bartells (Sacramento, CA) and Benjamin Tieu (Tualatin, OR) tied for 30th with a pair of 76's, Jake Yim (Lake Oswego, OR) was 70th with an 82, and William Rinehart (Denver, CO) was 78th with an 89.
Round 2: Second Place – 587 (295-302)
Redlands improved their finish by three spots thanks to the second lowest second round score of the 14-team invite. They finished two strokes ahead of Trinity and one back of the Kingsmen (CLU).
Buck moved up five positions into first place as he won the tournament title with a 143 (70-73). DeLeon settled for a tie in second place with a 144 (67-77).
Yim made a huge jump to help the Bulldogs move up as a team as he placed 32nd, 38 spots ahead of his first round finish. He shot a 72 and finished with a 154 (82-72).
Independent Tieu was 45th with a 157 (76-81). Bartells ended the competition in 62nd with a 162 (76-86) and Rinehart dropped nine strokes off his first round total as he finished 74th with a 169 (89-80).
Just over a week from now the Bulldogs will be on the opposite side of the country as they compete in the three-day, three-round Jekyll Island Collegiate Invitational in Jekyll Island, Georgia from March 21-23.
