JEKYLL ISLAND, Ga. – The University of Redlands Men's Golf team finished eighth at the Jekyll Island Collegiate in Georgia where they shot an 871 (293-287-291) thanks to Jonas De Leon (Rancho Cucamonga, CA) and Aaron Buck (Tualatin, OR) who each finished inside the Top-10 in a tournament with the majority of the Top-25 teams competing.
Round 1: 9th place – 293
After Round 1 the Bulldogs sat nine strokes out of first place thanks in large part to De Leon who was tied for first with a 66. That round is tied for the fifth lowest in program history. He holds the second lowest total of 65, which he shot last spring.
The rest of the Bulldogs in the field included Jake Yim (Lake Oswego, OR) in a tie for 61st with a 75, Buck and Damon Bartells (Sacramento, CA) sat in a tie for 83rd with 76's, and William Rinehart (Denver, CO) in a tie for 142nd with an 82.
Round 2: 5th place – 580 (293-287)
A four spot jump came on Saturday thanks to all five Bulldogs shooting a 75 or lower, while De Leon took sole possession of first place. As a team UR was six shots behind co-leaders No. 3 Sewanee University and No. 5 Emory University.
De Leon shot a 69 and brought his total to 135 (66-69). Buck cut his strokes down by five to a 71, which jumped him up 51 spots in a tie for 32nd.
Yim and Bartells shot a 74 and 73 moving them into a tie for 52nd. Rinehart dropped seven strokes off his first round and moved up 11 positions.
Round 3: 8th place – 871 (293-287-291)
After a strong first two rounds the Bulldogs finished only three strokes over par on the final day, but seven teams were able to shoot under par.
All seven teams that finished ahead of the Bulldogs in the standings are ranked inside the Top-11, including all five teams inside the Top-5 of The Golf Coaches of America rankings.
De Leon ended his competition three strokes off the winner and in fourth place with a 209 (66-69-74). He ends the tournament as one of only two golfers to shoot sub-70 twice.
Buck completed a great bounce back after the first round thanks to a third round 67 that pushed him into a tie for 10th with a 214 (76-71-67). The 67 is the 17th lowest single round score for the Bulldog golf program. It also ties his career low total with Redlands from fall 2023.
Bartells finished tied for 56th with a 223 (76-73-74). Yim shot a 230 (75-74-81) and came in tied for 111th. Rinehart tied for 123rd with a 233 (82-75-76).
After a weekend off this coming week, the Bulldogs will head to Palmdale for Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) No. 2 hosted by Pomona-Pitzer at Antelope Valley Country Club.
