REDLANDS, Calif. – The University of Redlands Men's Golf team will compete at the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Championships at Santa Anita Golf Course running from Thursday-Saturday, April 23-25, hosted by Occidental College.
The championships will determine SCIAC's automatic qualifying (AQ) team for the NCAA Division III National Championships occurring in May. SCIAC No. 1 and No. 2 will not factor into the final standings, just the standalone three-round championship.
At SCIAC No. 1 hosted by California Lutheran University (CLU), the Bulldogs finished fifth with a 594 (282-312). Notable performances came from William Rinehart (Denver, CO) who had a first round 67 and Ben Tieu (Tualatin, OR) who shot a 70 during the first round.
Then a month and a half later at the beginning of April in Beaumont, the Bulldogs took fourth place at SCIAC No. 2. They shot a 624 (322-302) as the field dealt with tough windy conditions. Jay Wing (Riverside, CA) tied for second with a pair of 74's (148).
The winner of the championship will advance to the NCAA Division III National Championships as one of 34 conference champions that automatically qualify. The next nine highest ranked non-AQ teams will earn a bid as well. The highest ranked individuals not on a qualifying team will also be selected. Last season there were 10 individuals.
Redlands is currently ranked No. 53 in the country, and for reference, Kenyon College at No. 15 was the lowest ranked at large selection last spring, so the Bulldogs' path to the NCAA Championships is winning the SCIAC Championship title.
Matthew Thorig (Mentone, CA) will be the first Bulldog to tee off beginning at 10:45 a.m. Thursday.
