Bulldog Men's Golf finishes tied for 20th in Georgia

JEKYLL ISLAND, Ga. – The University of Redlands men's golf team ended their long week with a 20th place finish at the Jekyll Island Collegiate Invitational that stretched  from Friday-Sunday.

Round 1 | T-22nd (297)

After round one Redlands had a very respectable 297, but they were one of 25 of the 30 teams to shoot a sub-300 as the average round score on the par 72 was 73.8.

The Bulldogs were nine strokes behind Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) rival and No. 8 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (CMS) for 13th place. The leaders, held by No. 6 The University of the South (Sewanee) and Huntingdon College, were out in front of the field by eight strokes and the Bulldogs by 26.

Jay Wing once again was out in front for the Bulldogs, sitting in 15th place after shooting a 69. He had a great start with three birdies and 10 pars after 13 holes. After a bogey on 14 he finished with three birdies.

Ben Tieu was also under par with a 71, good for 37th place. He only bogeyed two holes and added four birdies.

Cohen Gladheim shot a 77 and sat in 118th. He birdied three holes including two on the back nine.

The co-final scorers were Logan Benintend and William Rinehart in a tie for 138th with 80s. Benintend made up ground in the back nine with a 36 after a front nine 44. Rinehart was consistent, shooting a 40 on each side.

Round 2 | T-19th 585 (297-288)

The Bulldogs moved up three spots into a tie for 19th thanks to an even 288.

Wing continued to lead the Bulldogs sitting in a tie for 39th with a 143 (69-74). Wing played fairly clean golf, but a bogey to birdie ratio of 4-2 cost him some extra strokes.

Tieu also struggled to a 145 (71-74) as he had four bogeys along with a double. He did offset that damage with four birdies.

Benintend was the biggest mover, advancing 49 positions into a tie for 89th thanks to a 69. His total after two rounds was 149 (80-69). In round two he bogeyed only one hole and birdied four.

Gladheim improved his standing by 10 thanks to a 74. He sat in a tie for 108th with a 151 (77-74) after 36 holes. He started day two strong with three birdies across the opening eight holes, but four bogeys and no birdies on the final 10 cost him four strokes.

Round 3 | T-20th 883 (297-288-298)

Wing bounced back nicely with a final round 69 for a total of 212 (69-74-69) across the three rounds. Wing had one bogey but posted six birdies and finished in a tie for 23rd.

Gladheim moved up seven positions up into a tie for 101st with a 225 (77-74-74). He birdied back-to-back holes on 18 and one, but four bogeys cost him a chance to move up further.

Rinehart finished his tournament in a tie for 111th with a 227 (80-71-76). His final 18 holes saw him birdie 18 and three and bogey another six.

Tieu and Benintend tied for 118th with 228s. Tieu (71-74-83) had a rough final round, bogeying nine of his final 11 holes. Benintend (80-69-79) bogeyed five of eight holes on his first nine holes, but he came back with a stretch of eight holes with one bogey and one birdie.

Redlands gets the week off before hosting Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) No. 2 in Beaumont on April 3-4.
