Redlands Track and Field posts four NCAA Championship qualifying times and marks at APU Franson Last Chance

AZUSA, Calif. – After three days of competition at the Franson Last Chance meet hosted by Azusa Pacific University (APU), the University of Redlands Track and Field teams finished with four times/marks that would qualify athletes into the NCAA Division III National Championships if the season ended this past weekend, though, there are only four days remaining.  

Day 1

The first day was for the multi events. Jacob Huset (Tacoma, WA), Corte Peterson (Tabernash, CO), and Nikolas Sorich (San Jose, CA) competed in the Decathlon with Ella Bachmeier (Rancho Capistrano, CA) and Elisabeth Eichinger (Yucaipa, CA) competing in the Heptathlon.

Huset sat in third place with 3,627 points, only 22 behind the leader from NCAA Division II UC Colorado Springs. He took second in the 100m (11.06) scoring 847 points. In his next four events of the day, he finished sixth in the Long Jump (6.61m, 21' 8.25"), fourth in the Shot Put (11.97m, 39' 3.25"), fourth in his specialty the High Jump (1.82m, 5' 11.5"), and ended his day with a runner-up finish in the 400m (50.15), which added his second 800-point total of the day with 808.

Fifth place Peterson won the 100m (11.04), was fourth in the Long Jump (6.66m, 21' 10.25"), took seventh in the Shot Put (11.46m, 37' 7.25"), ninth in the High Jump (1.70m, 5' 7"), and rounding out the day was a big 810 points thanks to a win in the 400m (50.09). He totaled 3,514 points.

Sorich began the competition with a pair of fourth place finishes in the 100m (11.17) and Long Jump (6.66m 21' 10.25"). He then took 10th in the Shot Put (9.99m, 32' 9.5") and High Jump (1.64m, 5' 4.5"). His fifth and final event saw him take ninth and score 690 points in the 400m (52.81). He ended in ninth place with 3,228 points.

Bachmeier was sixth with 2,954 points. She crossed the finish line of the 100m Hurdles (14.34) in fifth place. She proceeded to then take 10th in the High Jump (1.52m, 4' 11.75"), seventh in the Shot Put (10.47m, 34' 4.25"), and eighth in the 200m (25.75).

Eichinger was 15th with 2,612 points. She had a rough start with a 17th-place finish in the 100m Hurdles (15.68) and a 14th-place finish in the High Jump (1.40m, 4' 7"). She rebounded, however, taking ninth in the Shot Put (10.21m 33' 6") and the 200m (25.93).

Days 2 and 3

Wrapping up the Decathlon on Friday saw Peterson move into third place with a personal best of 6,556 points, the third-highest total in program history. He began the second day with a sixth-place finish in 110m Hurdles (16.81). He then took sixth in the Discus (30.55m, 100' 3"), won his specialty the Pole Vault (4.60m, 15' 1"), second in the Javelin (45.65m, 149' 9"), and ended his competition with a runner-up finish in the 1500m (4:51.70). His total ranks ninth in the country, the Top 22 qualify for nationals with this week being the final week to post a qualifying mark.

Sorich took sixth with 5,651 points. He was eighth in the 110m Hurdles (17.09), fifth in the Discus (31.19m, 102' 4"), sixth in the Pole Vault (3.40m, 11' 1.75", personal best), fourth in the Javelin (42.92m, 140' 10", personal best), and ran sixth in the 1500m (5:34.47).

Huset dropped to seventh after not posting a finish in the Pole Vault or 1500m. He was in great position after the opening race taking second in the 110m Hurdles (15.23) and then came in fourth in the Discus (32.16m, 105; 6") before failing to record a mark in the Pole Vault. In the Javelin he took third (42.97m, 141').

Jude Holling (Sylmar, CA) took 11th in the 200m (21.76). Aram Sarkissian (Newbury Park, CA) finished 15th in the 400m (48.99). Holling, Derek Pangilinan (Rosamond, CA), Patrick Lang II (San Antonio, TX), and Sarkissian combined to run a 3:11.68 in the 4x400 relay, the third-fastest time in program history and the 13th-fastest time in the country.

Ronan Byrne (Portola Valley, CA) finished his 1500m in 3:49.53, moving him into fourth place in program history. Tyler Davies (Lake Forest, CA) also posted a new Top-10 mark when he finished 10th in the Shot Put with a 15.38m, 50' 5.5" throw, which is the eighth-best in program history.

The women's team had four new Top 10-times/marks. The first came from Sabrina Semmere (Rancho Santa Margarita, CA) who ran a 12.13 in the preliminaries of the 100m. The time is the sixth-fastest. In the 10,000m Kiera Beyer (Beaverton, OR) ran a 39:31.86 and took 11th posting the new sixth-fastest time.

The final two came from the Heptathletes.  Bachmeier finished her competition with 4,761 points, good enough for an eighth-place finish and the new second-best total in program history. She took 11th place in the Long Jump (5.13m, 16' 10"), 13th in the Javelin (27.25m, 89' 5"), and finished fifth with a personal best in the 800m (2:22.69). She moved into 12th place in the national rankings.

Eichinger scored 4,593 points, fifth-most for the Bulldogs and ninth in the competition. She had personal bests in all three of her events. In the Long Jump she finished seventh (5.41m, 17' 9"), fourth in the Javelin (34.95m, 114' 8"), and eighth in the 800m (2:26.62). She now ranks 22nd in the country.

Redlands ends the regular season by hosting the Redlands Final Qualifier this coming Wednesday-Thursday, May 14-15 as athletes will have their last opportunity to qualify for the NCAA Division III National Championships hosted in Geneva, Ohio on May 22-24.
