REDLANDS, Calif. – The University of Redlands had a strong Redlands Final Qualifier with multiple times/marks pushing the Bulldogs into NCAA Division III National Championship qualifying position for the competition next week.
Day 1
Most of the action on Wednesday came from the multi-event athletes. Nikolas Sorich (San Jose, CA) is third with 3,172 points. He took fourth in the 100m (11.18), fourth in the Long Jump (6.37m, 20' 10.75"), third in Shot Put (10.08m, 33' 1"), and ended his first day with a second place finish in the High Jump (1.64m, 5' 4.5").
The lead Bulldog in the Heptathlon was Elisabeth Eichinger (Yucaipa, CA) with 2,865 points. She finished inside the Top-3 in all four events, taking third in the 100m Hurdles (14.64), second in the High Jump (1.49m, 4' 10.5"), third in the Shot Put (10.22m, 33' 6.5"), and second in the 200m (25.73). Her hurdles time is the sixth-fastest in program history.
In the running events Ronan Byrne (Portola Valley, CA) won the 1500m (3:51.24) for the men and Kiera Beyer (Beaverton, OR) won the 1500m (4:58.81) for the women. David Huggins (Texarkana, TX) won his 5000m (15:28.53) by more than :21 seconds.
Ty Murga (Indio, CA) was the top Shot Put finisher and in the Discus (41.27, 135' 4") on the men's side and Chloe Schell (Arcadia, CA) (31.80m, 104' 4") led the women. Corte Peterson (Tabernash, CO) skipped the Decathlon and competed in the Javelin where he took seventh (43.33m, 142' 2"). Keegan Sherry (Shoreline, WA) took third in the Javelin (33.45m, 109' 9").
Day 2
The biggest moment for the Bulldogs came from Allyn Asberry-Blanco (Orange County, NY) who on potentially his final attempt as a Bulldog, jumped 14.69m, 48' 2.5", winning the Triple Jump and posting the fifth-best mark in program history. As of now it is the 20th-best mark in the country, which would qualify him as one of the Top-22 athletes in the Triple Jump for the National Championships.
On the women's side Eichinger locked in a spot in the Heptathlon for the National Championships as she scored 4,722 points, the third-most in program history and the 15th-best in the country. During her second day she jumped 5.57m, 18' 3.25" in the Long Jump as she took second and posted the fifth-best mark in program history.
Sabrina Semmere (Rancho Santa Margarita, CA) won the 100m (12.06) and 200m (24.43). Both of her times are new Top-10 marks, ranking fourth and second-fastest in program history.
Currently the Bulldogs have seven athletes looking to qualify for the NCAA Division III Outdoor National Championships. Mari Evonuk (Sherwood, OR) in the High Jump (1.68, 11th), Asberry-Blanco in the Triple Jump (14.69m, 20th), Maigan Adams (Los Angeles, CA) in the Triple Jump (12.22m, 6th), Ella Bachmeier (Rancho Capistrano, CA) in the Heptathlon (4,761, 13th), Eichinger in the Heptathlon (4,722, 15th), Peterson in the Decathlon (6,556, 9th), and Jacob Huset (Tacoma, WA) in the Decathlon (6,529, 13th). The Men's 4x400 relay team of Jude Holling (Sylmar, CA), Derek Pangilinan (Rosamond, CA), Patrick Lang II (San Antonio, TX), and Aram Sarkissian (Newbury Park, CA) are on the line with a 3:11.68 sitting in 22nd with multiple team's 'B' teams above them. Those teams will be phased out and the Top-16 schools will get one team each.
The NCAA Championships are next Thursday-Saturday, May 22-24 in Geneva, Ohio with selections being made this weekend for qualifications.
