PENFIELD, N.Y. – The University of Redlands Men's Golf team currently sit 23rd after posting a 307 during the opening round of the NCAA Division III National Championships. They are 17 strokes back of the leader, but only five strokes back of the Top-18 cut line.
By the end of round two tomorrow, the Bulldogs will need to be within the Top-18 teams in order to play their final two rounds and stay in the hunt for an NCAA Championship.
The individual co-leaders from University of Lynchburg and Bethel University (MN) are four under par with 68's. The Top-10 is at an even 72.
Leading the way for the Bulldogs was Jonas DeLeon (Rancho Cucamonga, CA) who is 31st after shooting a respectable 74. He and Redlands began their round on Hole 10. After nine holes he was even after a double on 11 and birdies on 17 and 18. The final nine holes he shot two over with three bogeys and a birdie.
Aaron Buck (Tualatin, OR) is 100th with a 77. He had three pars to begin the morning before a pair of bogeys on 13 and 14 pushed him two over. Seven of the next eight holes were parred before three bogeys and two birdies wrapped up his final five holes.
Cohen Gladheim (Sherwood, OR) and Damon Bartells (Sacramento, CA) are each tied for 119th with 78's. Gladheim bogeyed five of his first nine holes with a birdie on 17. A birdie on eight, his second-to-last hole of the day, pushed his total down from seven over to six.
Bartells was four over on the first nine holes before shooting two over on the final nine.
Jake Yim (Mercer Island, WA) shot an 81 and is 167th. His seven bogeys put himself behind early but the two doubles were the big issue as a bogey on each would have him 32 spots higher on the leaderboard.
The teams will have a shotgun start Wednesday morning with the Bulldogs teeing off at 5:05 a.m. pacific daylight time as the competitors look to avoid any perspective weather delays.
