REDLANDS, Calif. – The University of Redlands Baseball team qualified for their first Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Tournament since 2021 when not all SCIAC teams participated due to COVID-19. 2018 was the last full tournament they participated in, and they made it to the finals that year. They will play at California Lutheran University (CLU) this afternoon, Wednesday, May 7, at 3:00 p.m.
The Bulldogs finished in fifth place in the regular season, but they were only three games back of the 2025 SCIAC Regular Season Champions the University of La Verne and just a game behind second place finishers, Pomona-Pitzer, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (CMS), and California Lutheran Uni.
Tournament Format
The competition features a first round game for the first time as the fourth place team hosts the fifth place team in a win-or-go-home situation to determine the fourth and final team in the full double elimination tournament.
The winner of the first round game will travel to the No. 1 seed La Verne for a game at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 8. At the same time No. 2 Pomona-Pitzer hosts No. 3 Claremont-M-S. The two winners play at the site of the highest seed, while the two losing teams will do the same on Friday.
The loser of the game between the teams that lost their first game will be eliminated and the winner stays alive to play the loser of the winners game on Saturday at La Verne.
The lone undefeated team, the winner of the winners game, will play the victorious team from Saturday morning later that afternoon. If the undefeated team wins Saturday afternoon, they are SCIAC's automatic qualifying team for the NCAA Division III National Championships. But if they lose then a single game will be played on Sunday at La Verne with the winner earning the qualifying bid.
Here's the full schedule with first pitch times (times can change, some locations TBD):

No. 5 Redlands (26-14, 15-9 SCIAC)
The Bulldogs return to the tournament thanks to one of the best offenses in the conference and an improved pitching staff that has leaned on strong starts from Erik Radder and Nathan Buchan.
Radder, in conference play, has a 4-1 record with 32 strikeouts in 39.1 innings, which is the second-most on the team. He also has one complete game.
Buchan has been light's out for the Bulldogs this season and he has come through with a team-high 46 innings. His 3.33 earned run average (ERA) is the best among Bulldogs with double-digit innings pitched and has six of their 15 wins.
The starters have been key to keeping the bullpen fresh as Joe Godoy, Radder, and Buchan have made all eight of their potential starts, throwing 119.2 of the 207.2 innings, or 57.6 percent of the total innings.
Leadoff hitter Luke De Vries got off to a slow start, but the lone returning All-SCIAC member picked things up finishing with a team-high .380 average and .500 on-base percentage (OBP).
Mark Kirkland returned to the Bulldogs for one final season and led the team with 12 extra-base hits (XBH) and was third with 23 runs batted in (RBI).
One of the big additions for the Maroon and Grey was freshman Rylan Morris and sophomore third baseman Nate Miller put together an impressive year. They are second and first on the team in RBI's with 23 and 25, respectively. Miller is second in XBH with 11 and first in home runs with six. Morris had nine XBH with two coming on doubles, four on triples, and three home runs. He is the only Bulldog with multiples of each.
Lastly, Kaiya Saito, in a platoon role at catcher, hit .388 with a .450 (OBP). He added 13 RBI's and four XBH in only 49 at bats, about half as many as his everyday teammates.
