ARCADIA, Calif. – The University of Redlands men's golf team currently sits in fifth place after shooting a 290 during the first round of the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Championships. Jay Wing (Riverside, CA), however, is in a three-way tie for the individual lead after shooting a 66.
The championship lead is in the hands of No. 6 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (CMS) who was the only team to shoot under par with a 279. Occidental College is in second with a 287 followed by No. 24 Pomona-Pitzer (P-P) and No. 29 California Lutheran University (CLU) who both shot a 288.
Wing eagled his first hole and played clean golf through 11 holes. He finished his final seven holes with a par and two bogeys. Overall, he had five pars and that eagle.
Cohen Gladheim (Sherwood, OR) is tied for 10th with a 72. He had two bogeys and two pars on his front nine. On his final five holes he had two pars.
William Rinehart (Denver, CO) and Matthew Thorig (Mentone, CA) are tied for 26th with a pair of 76's. Rinehart had two pars and a birdie on his first three holes before a string of four bogeys on his next six. He cleaned it up on his back nine with eight pars.
Thorig continued the Bulldogs strong first hole play with a birdie. The rest of the front nine he posted six pars. Except for holes 12 through 16, when he had three bogeys, he had pars on 10 of his final 13 holes.
Ben Tieu (Tualatin, OR) was the last Bulldog to score shooting a 79, which places him in 32nd place. He birdied Hole 1 and Hole 18 during the round, but it would be the four bogey's on the front and four on the back that put him six over.
The second round begins Friday morning at Santa Anita Golf Club with the first tee time for the Bulldogs beginning at 10:45am.
