Redlands Cross Country Teams Record Solid Showing at Stanford Invitational

Facing some of the fastest runners college athletics has to offer in the state of California, the University of Redlands men's and women's cross country teams held their own, placing 27th and 29th, respectively, at the Stanford Cross Country Invitational at Stanford University on Sept. 27.

Stanford won both the men's and women's meets, and Division I powerhouses UC Berkeley, UC Santa Barbara, UCLA and Arkansas were also among the teams competing.

In total, 234 male student-athletes and 278 female student-athletes ran the course. The men competed in the 8K run while the women competed in the 6K run.

Sophomore Jeremy Kalmus (New Orleans, LA) paced the pack of Bulldog men, turning in a solid 27:32 in the men's race for 166th place, averaging a 5:33 pace per mile.

Four Redlands harriers crossed the finish line within 30 seconds of each other. Sophomore Alec Fillmore (Riverside, CA) clocked a 28:15 time, which proved good enough for 198th place while junior Jake Baechle (Aurora, OH) finished 206th with a 28:33 standard. In a close race to the finish, freshman Aaron Minsk (Puyallup, WA) prevailed, edging out his teammate, freshman Duncan Ashby (Goleta, CA), 28:44-28:45. The two finished 212th and 213th, respectively.

Finally, senior Jeff West (Denver, CO) rounded out the Bulldog finishers with a 227th-place finish (30:31).

On the women's side, junior Stephanie Mera (Redlands, CA) led the maroon and gray, crossing just before freshman Camila Alvarez (San Bernardino, CA) with a 191st-place time of 24:45. Alvarez took 193rd with her 24:48 mark.

Freshman Fiona Wilhelm (Boise, ID) nabbed the 207th-place spot with a 25:11 time while sophomore Katie Ostrinski (Riverside, CA) and junior Kelly Luck (Boulder, CO) earned times of 25:15 and 25:19 to finish 212th and 215th, respectively.

Rounding out the Bulldog women, sophomore Heather Mayer (Spring Valley, CA) came in 228th place (25:59).

Redlands takes a few weekends off from competition before competing in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Multi-Dual Meet in La Mirada on Oct. 18 at 9 a.m.
