The University of Redlands women's soccer team lost, 0-2,
to Occidental College in Thursday evening's Southern
California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Postseason
Tournament semifinal on Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges'
Pritzlaff Field in Claremont.
The Bulldogs, who finished out the regular season at second in the
conference standings, went down early and were never able to
recover.
In the fourth minute, Occidental's Season Falkner-Rodriguez
headed a Liz Martin corner-kick attempt into the goal, setting the
table for the Tigers.
Both teams traded shots for nearly 30 minutes until Lei Song tacked
on a score for the Tigers, burying a loose ball from six yards
out.
Entering halftime, Occidental held a 10-9 margin in shots.
Just minutes into the second frame, the Bulldogs received a chance
to breathe life back into their cause as junior defender Chelsea
Hafley (Redlands, CA) struck a ball that Occidental goalkeeper
Robin Feldman turned away. Freshman defender Meghan King (Portland,
OR) shot seconds later, launching a hard attempt high over the
crossbar.
Despite outshooting their opponent, 11-8, in the second period, the
Maroon and Gray came up empty handed.
In what could be her last-ever game, senior goalkeeper Tenley
Rawlings (Salt Lake City, UT) put forth a valiant effort, stopping
seven shots in between the pipes for the Bulldogs. Feldman kept a
clean sheet for the Tigers, earning an eight-save shutout.
The loss marked just the second time this season that a team has
shut out Redlands. Chapman University was the last opponent to hold
the Bulldogs scoreless for 90 minutes when it won, 1-0, on Sept.
10.
Occidental (10-6, 7-5 SCIAC) faces the winner of the 7:30 p.m. game
between Claremont-Mudd-Scripps and Cal Lutheran University in
Saturday's SCIAC Postseason Tournament final. Site and time
is to be determined.
Redlands (11-7, 9-3 SCIAC) has a long-shot hope of an at-large bid
into the NCAA Championships, boasting a win against then-No. 10
Wheaton College (IL). The Bulldogs, who lost four seniors after
their SCIAC-championship run last season, continued to wreak havoc
in the conference, losing to only Claremont-Mudd-Scripps and
Pomona-Pitzer Colleges in SCIAC play.
