The University of Redlands women's lacrosse team halted its
recent two-game skid with a solid 19-11 victory over Whittier
College on Sunday in a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic
Conference (SCIAC) showdown between the second- and third-place
squads. With the win, the Bulldogs secure their spot as the No. 2
seed going into Friday's first-ever SCIAC Tournament and look
forward to facing the Poets in Friday's match.
Playing in Whittier on Sunday, the teams traded goals during the
first 10 minutes, with Whittier drawing first blood at 25:33.
Down 1-2, the Maroon and Gray lit up the scoreboard on a
subsequent 9-0 run to finish out the opening period. During this
span, senior midfielder Haley Kern (Portland, OR) posted a hat
trick in less than two minutes, while sophomore attack player
Ashley Finke (Austin, TX) added two of her three goals on the day.
With a 10-2 advantage, the Bulldogs remained ahead until the
final whistle, earning an impressive 19-11 victory over the Poets.
Sophomore Ana Martinez (Pleasanton, CA) patrolled the Redlands
goal for just over 56 minutes, making 14 stops between the pipes
and earning her ninth win of the season. Freshman goalkeeper
Stephanie Honeycutt (Portland, OR) finished out the game for the
Bulldogs.
Junior midfielder Christy Smith (St. Louis Park, MN) supplied
five goals on just seven shots while also providing one assist.
Freshman midfielder Katie Colasurdo (Eugene, OR) racked up five
draw controls to go along with two ground balls and one goal.
Sophomore midfielder Megan Prickett (Poway, CA) scored the eventual
game-winner with 26:10 remaining in the second half. She finished
out the contest with two goals and three draw controls.
Redlands (10-6, 5-3 SCIAC) looks forward to playing the Poets of
Whittier again on Friday in the inaugural SCIAC Women's Lacrosse
