SANTA CRUZ, Calif. – The University of Redlands Women's Golf team played the first round of the Hollins Cup Sunday afternoon and they shot a 325, currently sitting in fifth place.
The eight teams started the tournament a day early as inclement weather is expected Monday with the scheduled second round will still set for tee off on Tuesday.
The Bulldogs are five and eight strokes behind Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) rivals Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (CMS) and Pomona-Pitzer (P-P), respectively, who are fourth and third. The leader Emory University is 24 strokes clear.
Leading the Bulldogs is Chloe Phan (Milpitas, CA) who is 11th after shooting a 79. She and the rest of her teammates began their round on hole number five. She had six pars across her first eight holes, but bogeys on five of her next six put her eight over. She bounced back though with birdies on two of her final three holes.
A few spots back of Phan is Jizelle Robledo (Fontana, CA) who shot an 80. She bogeyed her first hole before a string of four-straight pars. She too struggled on holes 13-18 bogeying five of them, but a birdie on 15 mitigated some of the damage.
With 83's and tied for 26th are Kylie McGrath (Renton, WA) and Savanah Christenson (Upland, CA). McGrath birdied nine and parred her final four holes. Christenson had a birdie on one and pars on three and four to end her day.
Cecili Hayes (Vancouver, WA) shot an 88 and is 40th. She picked up a birdie on 10 and parred five of her last six holes.
Redlands does not play round two due to expected bad weather, so they will tee off the final 18 holes on Tuesday morning in what will be their final round of their fall schedule.
