SCIAC Tournament Semifinal Preview: No. 1 Redlands vs. No. 4 Occidental

REDLANDS, Calif. – The University of Redlands men's basketball team finished 13-3 in Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) play which tied them with Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (CMS) for their second consecutive co-regular season title. Thanks to a head-to-head advantage over CMS, the Bulldogs will host Occidental College tomorrow, Friday, February 27, at 7 p.m. inside Currier Gymnasium as the No. 1 seed.

Team/player stats rankings

The Bulldogs led SCIAC in scoring during conference play at 91.9, nine points higher than second place Occidental. Redlands' defense concedes 74 points which is the third lowest mark. Combining those two and their margin of victory is 17.9, the highest by 6.7.

On the other side the Tigers average 82.9 points per game, allow 74.9 points (4th), and have a scoring margin of eight (3rd).

The two teams are among the most efficient teams in SCAIC. Redlands shot 47 percent from the field (3rd) and Occidental shot 49.7 (2nd). On the other end the Bulldogs allowed a 45.2 percent mark (5th) while the Tigers held opponents to a 41.6 percent shooting mark (2nd).

Individually SCIAC Athlete of the Year Lucas Gordon is the highest scorer for the Bulldogs, averaging 14.3 points, the eighth highest average. Fellow All-SCIAC selections Jake Hlywiak averaged 12.6 points (15th), Jhace Boston 11.1 (20th), and Omari Ferguson 10.9 (21st).

Gordon is third in rebounding (9.0) and Boston is ninth (6.1). Boston also led the team and is sixth in SCIAC in assists (3.6). Boston and Gordon are second and fourth in blocks (1.5 and 1.3) and Ferguson and Boston are second and seventh in steals (2.3 and 1.8).

The Tigers' All-Selections, Alex McCleery Brown and Nasir Luna, are their top two scorers, averaging 19.4 and 17.9 points, the third and fifth best averages. Quietly Nicky Clotfelter is seventh at 15.4.

McCleery Brown is second in rebounding at 10.6, Clotfelter is 12th (5.8), and Luna 17th (5.1). Atticus Boba sits seventh in assists (3.6) and Luna eighth (3.5). Boba is first in assist-to-turnover ratio at 2.8. McCleery Brown averaged 2.1 steals (4th).

Tournament schedule

This semifinal winner takes on the winner of the other semifinal between No. 2 CMS and No. 3 Chapman University on Sunday at the highest remaining seed at 2 p.m. for SCIACs automatic qualifying bid into the NCAA Tournament.
